Forthcoming Run Details
News from Ton-up Tasmania
Hats off to Arby & Su for the fabbo job of the last Spring / Summer 2001 Newsletter issue.  What an excellent effort!  With Nic & myself backpacking around Europe for a big part of 2001, skipping a newsletter wasn’t even an option for this fearless due – their commitment & loyalty in keeping the team together with the news & runs was exceptional & commendable & very much appreciated.  Thanks so much guys – it makes it so worthwhile knowing the support is there when needed.

We received our copy through Linda Wilsmore at the ACE Café when we arrived in London.  After 5 months on the road in foreign lands you can imagine the warmth we felt receiving our own copy, finding a corner and getting all homesick reading about our friends back at home & what we were missing out on.  Thanks again Arby & Su for a really enjoyable and excellent issue.

Su, Arby & of course Russell W are also the team responsible for our club website which has been getting some great feedback lately.  So again we all owe them lots of deserved gratitude for their over time & dedication.  Especially when it comes to replying to the hoards of Email enquires that we get.  Check out their handiwork at our club site at www.dropbears.com or type in your browser dropbears.com/t/tonup/index.htm.  There may even be a photo of you amongst all the attractive mugshots.

Our trip went really well & we enjoyed ourselves very much.  Our pilgrimage to the UK, The ACE Café, Ride With The Rockers Day @ Brighton Beach etc etc all lived up to expectations.  We were fortunate to be there last year for the official re-opening of the ACE, which added to our already memorable experience.  Highlights included finally meeting Linda & Mark Wilsmore, & our friend from The Netherlands, Ton, who also made the journey for the day.  We also met up with Lizzy, who introduced us to all her old biker friends from the Bexley Triumph Owners Club & showed us around a bit.  Big thanks to Ton & Lizzy for your company on the day, it truly added to our already fabbo weekend.  Read on for the weekend review.

Bowlerama  -  The 2002 Los Barrachos Bowling Tournament is well & truly underway with the season already into its second round.  Still too early yet to pick this years leaders – but after last years effort, both Ton-Up Boys & Girls teams better pull their fingers out if they ever want to see that legendary cup again.  Big Congratulations to the Sector 7 team who took the 2001 premiership, team captain & sidecar swinger extraordinaire Craig said “all we did was roll the ball to knock down as many bottles as we could!” – thanks Craig.  The Los Parditos award (Losers Cup) went to the ‘Mis Fits’ for getting the lowest score – great effort team.  Best improved went to young Ben who pulled the Team Ton-Up-Boys out of the slumps & from total embarrassment.  Thanks Ben!  Highest individual score for the season was Al.  Well-done Al!  The 2001 final presentation & awards night was again held in style at Torinos Pizza Enmore and afterwards at the Duke Hotel.  Big thanks to Beccy for all the work & effort for pulling off another excellent season.  The final 2001 scores were:
Sector 7  7389
Gutter Turkeys 6831
Ton-Up-Boys  5269
Ton-Up-Devil Dolls 5055
The Miss Fits  4783
If you’re interested to come along for a bowl – it’s the first Thursday of each month at Enfield Bowling.  Don’t forget there’s always room to fit one more on the team.  See ya’ there!  We here the Vic TUBs have formed their own Bowling team and are sending their scores across monthly – welcome aboard fellas!

After many long hours back in the shed, the gossip is that Ray, Baz & and Racing Team will be back on the track sooner than we thing.  After a long stream of mechanical misfortunes beyond anyone’s control, Ray’s been patiently putting the baby back together, piece by piece & we look forward to seeing him out there, doin’ his thang.  Hopefully he might have a ‘racing news page’ ready for this issue to fill us in on more details.  Fingers crossed for the Autumn Classics in April – so git yourselves out there for some support.

The recent annual Team-Ton-Up-Racing Benefit Poker night in February saw a group of supporters raiding Bazzas place again for another bleary night of ‘Cursin’ & Cheatin’ to raise a small contribution to help go towards the racing team.  After what seemed like endless hours in the darkness, a new champ finally emerged from the table – this year another ‘Ton-Up-Lady’, Lizzy, claiming the legendary trophy and 2002 title.  Runner up & very close second was Des who received a bottle of Bourbon (donated by Lew) & this years new ‘lucky door’ prize was won by Jamie – who received a very good looking BSA/Rockers T-Shirt from the U.K. (donated by Lizzy).  All had a great night and, as usual, we look forward to doing it all again next year.  Big thanks to Baz & Rebel for using their place & the famous ‘Marinated Ockie’

Speaking of racing – what’s this we’ve been hearing of some of the boys doing some ‘flat tracking’ on the side – could the Team Ton-Up be broadening its portfolio??  Stay tuned… (see ‘other dates’ – Go Baz Go)

It seems the Ton-Ups had some cool media coverage recently – including a full page write up & photos in Januarys Cruisin’ Magazine.  This feature focused on the latest TUB Rockers Day run & had some very slick pics – I don’t suppose our Southern Nowra connection – heartthrob Les had anything to do with this?!  Apparently February’s issue has a cool piece on Les’ latest throw together Custom FB – check it out!

Another fantastic magazine called ‘Big Beat of the 50’s’ featured a fab double page spread in their February issue on our group – again focusing on our Rockers Day in Sept. as well as the Club in general.  This Melbourne based mag is truly a must for anyone into the 50’s & Rock’n’Roll culture & has extensive & interesting features, stories & reviews on anything fifties.  The packed Feb issue included great reading & pics from national 50’s festivals & gigs (incl. Greazfest) to dedications to Pat Cupp, Hank Williams & Johnny O’Keefe, well worth taking the time to sit back & flick through for a few hours.  Big Beat of the 50’s is the official Club Magazine of the Australian Rock’n’Roll Appreciation Society & is available through subscription only at $25 per 4 copies.  Highly recommended.  Tell ‘em you’re a Ton-Up.  For info: Big Beat ARRAS inc., PO Box 21, World Trade Centre, Melbourne Vic 3005.  Tel# 03 9462 3950.

Next time you’re watching ‘Top of the Pops’ on Saturday morning, keep a look out for Sony’s latest commodity – Delta, and her latest film clip release called ‘I Don’t Care’ which is fortunate to feature a ratty 70’s Triumph Bonnie belonging to another, just as famous T.U.B..  Although the owner of said bike was not fortunate enough to be chosen to play the Leading Man for the 16 y.o. commercial glamour – obviously the directors’ choice, as we all know Delta ‘wanted him bad’!! (Onya’ Arby).  Only if these beautiful showbiz people knew the pain we go through to uphold our loser Brit Bike riding image that they always use.

Yeah Baby… He’s a Wild One …

Talking earlier of Johnny O’Keefe, our friends Karl & Delores on the North side have been very busy lately, doing the rounds with the Buddy Is Back – Buddy Holly tribute show currently touring all over the place.  Karl’s one of the Crickets playing lead guitar & even does a guest spot as Richie Valens (love ya’ Spanish Karl!).  Check it out when it comes to a venue near you, but be quick – Karl just scored the starring role in the upcoming Johnny O’Keefe Show & is currently rehearsing for the big part, not sure when the season starts – but look out! for the Wild One!  Sure you’ll hear all about it soon.

With interest & enthusiasm in classic & British Motorcycles seemingly gradually dwindling over the years, it’s great to hear of a new official British Bike Club being formed to revive what’s left.  Good to see these lads making an effort & interesting to see how it all goes.  Meetings are monthly – read on for full details & information.  Although the TUBs were invited to sit in on the first meeting, we unfortunately missed out due to a bungled telephone message from a trusty reliable fellow work employee (Arrrgh!).  Anyway, we heard all went well and are sure to hear a lot more in the future.

Meanwhile, guys like Chris & Geoff from the Norton Owners Club are always doing their bit – putting together their now well know regular Made in England Runs which are attracting more bikes every time.  Next run is May 26th (see dates for info).  Big thanks to the Norton Owners Club for their issues of the excellent ‘Ocker Noccer’ club magazine.  The very active Norton Club also meets the first Friday of each month at Concord, for more info Grant on 9558 2628.

Ferris Wheels has been keeping us informed of his very appealing Motorcycle Safaris of remote & exotic places in the world (on Indian Enfields), and also to inform us that their office has relocated.  Sounds like word is getting round about his tours and they are starting to fill up quicker than ever.  At the moment his dreamy expeditions include Turkey, Himalayas, the Andes and Nepal.  For more info and dates on this once in a life time experience contact Ferris Wheels Safaris PO Box 526 Thirroul NSW 2515 Phn: 02 4267 5555, tell ‘em you’re a Ton-Up.

The now established hot roddin’ Newsledder mag is aimed at promoting the building and driving of kustom cars and traditional rods, and anything else with wheels.  A truly cool and well produced mag which covers everything in the custom world from dragsters, tech tips, national gig guide, o/s news, rockin’ reviews, 4sale and even Max Hell Cat has her very own page.  Any contributions are always welcome, check it out – subscription is $32 per year for 6 issues.  Write to The Newsledder PO Box 2324 North Parramatta NSW 1750.

If you didn’t already know – the National Motorcycle Museum has moved from its long time location in Canberra and is now in Nabiac (near Taree).  They have sent us some info to pass on the new details.  Could be a great idea for a weekend run??  It’s all too easy to sometimes take such a great thing for granted, so check it out if you get a chance, it really is a brilliant collection.

Martine of Atomic Jive is still running her ever-popular dance classes.  Due to the closure of Newtown RSL the venue has changed to upstairs @ the Unity Hall, Balmain.  No need to have your own partner as lessons are fun with a continual rotation of partners – but by all means bring all your friends and go along to these highly enjoyable and personally recommended-by-Riz lessons.  After class you can all venture down to the regular Wednesday nite R’n’R gigs to practice your newly learnt steps.  For further info on class times contact Martine or Tony via email at atomicjive@hotmail.com or mobile 0411 435 185.
